In the dairy industry, beneficiaries must perform controls in various stages of the value chain and in all batches of the final product. <\/p> <\/div>

Health-critical milk contaminants<\/h4>

Aflatoxin-M1 and animal treatment antibiotic residues (penicillin, enrofloxacin) may impose critical health risks.<\/p> <\/div>

Even tiny quantities in milk contaminants require the discard of the whole batch, due to their severity on human health.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/div>

Laboratory Methods<\/h3>

Time-consuming:<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>3+ hours if they have to be outsourced.\n

Expensive:<\/span><\/span><\/span> Thousands are spent each year to cover the analysis costs of production-level quantities.<\/span>
\n
Require specialisation:<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Specialised staff is required to perform the tests and analyse the samples. <\/p> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Rapid Screening Methods<\/h3>

No simultaneous detection:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>C<\/span>an either detect Aflatoxin-M1 or antibiotics.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Low reliability:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Although they are fast, 10<\/span>-40 minutes, many false positives are produced.
\n
Dependant on laboratory verification:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>In case of positive results, a lab test verification is anyway needed addding to costs and delays. <\/p><\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/div>

The MILI Innovation<\/b><\/h2>

MILI instrument <\/span>is based on state-of-the-art biophotonics, combining customised biosensors, optical analysis, electronics and software modules. The proposed technology aims to achieve the following: \n
   (a)<\/b> Assay system able to simultaneously detect the concentration of              specific antibiotics and aflatoxin below the MRLs as per EU                          regulations,  \n
   (b)<\/b> Quality of analysis equivalent to that provided by laboratories,\n
   (c)<\/b> No need for trained personnel to perform the test\/collect samples,\n
   (d)<\/b> Results in less than 10 minutes, \n
   (e) <\/b>Costs that are significantly lower than those of current market-                  available solutions.<\/p>

Project Scope<\/h4>

MILI is a pioneering project aiming to revolutionising the way that milk quality analysis is currently performed, significantly increasing dairy product safety and quality in favour of the consumers.\n

Research activities in the project are focused on photonics technology and biosensing methods, both cutting-edge fields and key enabling technologies for multiple application domains.<\/p>

Roadmap towards system validation<\/h4>

During the project specific objectives are to be accomplished, aiming to:\n
  \u2022 Establish user and system requirements \n
  \u2022 Conceptual design based on requirements.
  \u2022 Design and develop all system modules. 
  \u2022 Integrate and develope a fully functional MILI prototype.
  \u2022 Prepare the validation protocol.
  \u2022 Test and validate the functionality of the prototype.
  \u2022 Assess the performance against all evaluation metrics & technical KPIs.<\/p>
